4 was originally supposed to be direct-to-DVD... But then right at the start of production, they thought if they added 3D to it they could drum it up enough to be a proper theatrical release, so they did. So yep you're absolutely right.

Its kind of why the actors and actresses in it are all unknowns.. it was cast for a DVD release :| I don't recognize anyone in 5 either... The first 3 actually had recognizable people in them.
