I really can't stand it when I call someone, leave them a voice message, and then they call back and say, "I missed your call, what's up?" But since I really hate actually speaking on the phone and just want to get it over with, I just tell them what I said instead of telling them to listen to my voice message and call me back.

But seriously, that's annoying. If you don't want people leaving you voice mail messages, please say so in your outgoing voice mail greeting.

And hopefully everyone will one day have transcription in their voice mail so that they get a text message and an email version of their voice mails so they can read it instead of calling me and asking what I said. I set mine up this morning and it works great. You should set it up, too. Or at least listen to your voice mail before calling me back.

"But since I really hate actually speaking on the phone and just want to get it over with"

I relate to this so hard.

I have Google Voice. It is A++++++++++ except the transcription is usually quite hilarious. It tends to be "close enough" that you have an idea of what it is about without listening to the message, but it is never actually correct and I get to laugh at it usually.

I wasn't going to use my google voice at all, but when they offered voice mail services with your existing phone number I was quite excited.

I think they should offer full services to Android users on the existing phone number. That shouldn't be too hard.

I have to admit, I used to HATE listening to voicemail, but since I have an iphone now it's SO much better. It couldn't be easier to listen to vm so now I just do it immediately.

You don't actually have to "use" your Google Voice to use it for voicemail. I have my voicemail forwarding number set to my GV account, so no matter what # people call me at, the VM goes to GV.

I'll do that when it is someone from the hospital calling in case it is an emergency, but the rest of the time I let most calls go to voice mail so I do not have to listen to another person talk.

If you think it's an emergency, why don't you answer the phone?

That's if I miss the call and see it was the hospital or a coworker. Most time, I'll answer if it is work and I know I'm not in trouble.

Yeah, even if I just missed the call, I'll at least give the message a listen before calling back... just in case... unless it's super obvious why they called or something.

OH FUCK, thanks for that link, I've been waiting to make the switch from Youmail to Google Voice until I could keep my number!

it *usually* gives me at least a general idea of what the message is about, but i still have to eventually listen to it ;)

Yeah, why would you call someone back without listening to the message? Sometimes it's just a message that requires no callback. DUH.

When I used to have a pager that you could leave a voicemail on, Jackson would leave me voice messages. I would go to a payphone and listen to the message, only to find that it was him asking me to call him back. JUST PUNCH IN THE NUMBER UGH

BR68 should still shut up.

I too really hate talking on the phone. I especially hated talking on the phone to Sali (the musician), because his Bulgarian accent was so thick, and his English was bad enough, and I slur my words enough that we'd spend half the time going, "what?"

SO ANNOYING. But thankfully I won't be talking on the phone to him again.

Frankly, I'd rather be on the computer or talking face to face.

I even asked him specifically not to do that and he'd be all "don't you want to hear my voice?" No, I actually want to talk about whatever it was and now I can't because I used my last 35 cents on the call to the pager voicemail!

I'm not making two phone calls (one for the message, then one back) just to talk to you when I could make one.

And don't tell me "I left a message you don't need to call back" because you would've just sent me a text or email if that were the case. 15 years ago when there were pay phones or you borrowed an office phone for a call to leave a message, that's a different story. You've got a phone with a full keyboard. Write the basics if I don't need to call you back.

If I get unknown calls and messages, then I listen to those. Maybe your cell died and you gotta borrow a phone (which I doubt, because these days nobody can remember a phone number). Fine. I check messages for those.

If I leave you a voice mail and you call and ask what it says I am hanging up on you.

Luckily this will never happen because I don't call people.

I generally hate being on the phone myself, so I'll always check my voicemail to see what the person wanted. If it's urgent, I'll call them right back. If not, then I'll text them or call them back later if needed.

Transcription?

What could do that? So far I only know of LiveJournal's spin vox interface. It seems like a logical step, though.
