The way my boyfriend did it a week ago.

He didn't take me to a ball game and have it displayed on a blimp or JumboTron. He didn't hire a singing telegram or make a cheesey machinima youtube video. None of that weird stuff that guys do to make it impossible for the guy or girl to say no even if he or she doesn't really want to say yes.

He just told me in a very sweet way what I mean to him and asked me to make it legal. He surprised me with love and honesty, and made my heart soar.

First of all, the very thought of folks getting married makes me bawl. Even if it's two people I don't even know. A few years ago, I was Best Man for my friend's wedding in New Mexico, and when I was called upon to do a speech, I totally lost it, as I was recalling a Thanksgiving I'd spent with his family.

This summer, Tim and I had gone to an advance screening of "The Proposal". On the way to the car afterwards, I asked him if he thought we'd ever do that ourselves. So that's how it happened: me sobbing in the parking lot. But he said yes.

We're still not sure when and where it's going to happen. But until it does, both our Facebook relationship statuses will read "Engaged To..."
