I have been avoiding Nhu Y for some time, because one of my once-weekly haunts, An Thinh, was in their spot, and I was really sad to see them close. I don't know what all has changed, because the menu mostly looks the same, and very little has changed inside. Even the paper sign listing specials hasn't changed, or even been moved. They took down the god-awful lace curtains, but replaced them with bamboo screening material held up by scotch tape. Classy. I always looked forward to my perfect bowl of bun, an excellent cup of coffee, and the spunky waitress who used to work there. Today, the kid who is forced to sit there with his mom all day came over to me, touched my leg, asked a question I couldn't understand, and then climbed into the chair across from me. A little less annoying than the kid at Vietnam House that stared at me my entire meal once, but still annoying. The condiments on the table are the same; hoisin sauce, Sriracha, chili paste, chili oil, soy sauce, fish sauce, salt, pepper, and sugar, but I have no plans to go back and put them to use. Nhu Y is in a strip mall with three other restaurants I like, in a neighborhood with endless good food choices, so there's no reason to go back for food I don't like in a place I don't like. Sad.
