When I first moved to Washington, it would snow every 2-3 years and it would never stick around long. That's why we don't have the means to deal with it very well. And the terrain is terrible for it. Steep hills everywhere you look plunging onto things like ravines, rivers, and busy freeways. Terrible combination. Climate change means harsher winters, too, so now we get snow every year and it takes forever for it to go away. This might even be the first year we got it a second time where I was living.

You can even get an idea in these photos from my front porch how annoying my neighborhood is in the snow. Oftentimes most of the city streets will be fine thanks to all the traffic, but getting in and out of our neighborhood is the hard part. I woke up thinking that might be the case right now and that I could maybe head over to the pool, so the first thing I did was check the traffic cameras on the nearest main drag. They all look terrible.

The obvious next step was to check the weather forecast. No snow expected today or tomorrow, but the highs are 26F/-3C and 25F/-4C respectively, so we can't really expect the snow that's around to melt. The city will do its best to sand and plow with limited resources, but a dead-end street like ours is always a last priority. Even if they do plow, that means a big hill of snow at the foot of the driveway to deal with. We're both parked on the street so we don't get trapped by our contractor's truck while he uses half the garage as his work space, so plowing could also wall in the cars.

After today and tomorrow, more snow is expected on Friday, but the temperature will be much higher so it shouldn't stick at all and what's there will start to go away. Finally after that, several days of rain and even higher temperatures.

What it all comes down to is, we're probably stuck here until Christmas Eve, at which point we'll pick up my mother-in-law so she can spend the night here. And then the YMCA will be closed until the new year for their employee wellness week. So if I don't get in there in the next few days, it'll be a while. It'd be a great time to get a tattoo if I could get out of here.

No amount of boredom or frustration is worth my car sliding into another one. And the grocery store is just four blocks away if we want to walk to it.
