Proud to work at the Y
Jun. 28th, 2024 05:00 pmThere's someone at the Y who's been giving me the stinkeye whenever we're both on the pool deck the last few weeks. I always assumed that was just how he looked but today he walked up as I was teaching, stopped and stared, then gave me a much more exaggerated version of the nasty look. I turned back to the people closest to me in my class, shrugged, and kept going. A bit later, a bunch of water splashed over onto the pad I teach from. I didn't see what happened but assumed maybe a sample of pool water for testing spilled or something.
During my final break in the class before cooldown, a lifeguard came over to ask if I was ok. I thought he was asking about how much I was sweating in the heat, but it turns out that guy with the stinkeye got into the hot tub and started talking about me with some pretty choice words. Others in the hot tub with him wondered why he didn't say things like that to my face, and I guess things got heated. Was that when the big splash happened? I'm not sure. A lifeguard asked him to explain what happened and that's when he continued with the choice words.
People like that tend to think everyone agrees with them but that's far from the truth. He was escorted from the building and by the end of the day, his membership was deactivated and he's no longer welcome at the Y. They fly big pride flags at every location and it's wonderful to see that it's not an empty gesture.
