Had a bit of a setback with my knee when I took Tilly for a walk without a brace on. It hurt enough the next day that I went to urgent care, thankfully they did x-rays and we learned definitively that there's no damage. Not that getting those x-rays was easy at all; I had to stand completely still in some very awkward positions that would have been hard to hold even if I didn't have the knee issue.

Diagnosis: bruised patella. The doctor gave me a better brace than the one I showed up to the clinic in, plus some physical theraphy exercises. That's another batch of physical therapy exercises for my collection! The first was for lower back pain and that started way back when I still lived in Seattle, before I even met Garrett. More recently, I wasn't stretching after my very long walks and gave myself plantar fasciitis. My personal experience with that is why I start my cooldown at the end of class with good calf stretches. A lot of people don't do any of the cooldown and stretching, and people drop out all during it, so I figure if I can get people to do what I consider most important, that's an accomplishment.

And I say it's the most important because it's really not that uncommon to have big strong calves even if you're not super active or strong. Just getting around can make them big, and if you've got a bigger body, they can end up even stronger. Those strong calves pull the bottoms of your feet tight and that's where the problems begin.

I taught Thursday and Friday in the brace, which was awkward, but fine. People know me and love my class and are very familiar with what I do, so they're grateful it's not canceled and gracious about my decreased abilities. Luckily with the few things I can't do at all, I can do them on the other side and then yell to switch legs.

Physical therapy is important for building up strength but rest for healing is the most important thing. I've been spending a lot of time reclined with my knee up and also trying to avoid extra trips up and down the stairs. Right now I'm kicking myself (ha) for forgetting to grab the green tank top I'm pretty sure is in the closet upstairs to possibly wear today for St. Patrick's day. I keep the ones in regular rotation in my office downstairs, but with some green shorts I have down here, I might be able to make a wonderfully tacky, fully green outfit.
