Finally, the collection will be complete
Apr. 11th, 2026 09:01 amEight days ago, some of the women from my Friday class slipped out as I started the cool down portion of the class. I didn't really notice because people start to leave right then anyway, but I definitely noticed when they came back. Seven of them emerged from the women's locker room wearing matching shirts they had printed and came up to hug me and tell me I'm their favorite instructor that they love me and my class. What a treat!

Completely unrelated except it's also about water fitness, I finally get to teach in Stanwood this week! We have six locations: Everett, Mill Creek, Mukilteo, Marysville, Monroe, and Stanwood. Everett is the flagship location and my home branch, and is geographically the most central, but Monroe and and Stanwood are further out from the main group. When instructors sub at a location other than their home branch, they get reimbursed for mileage. This puts a strain on Monroe and Stanwood, so they avoid bringing in outside subs as much as possible. In fact, I agreed to sub out in Monroe for several weeks back when I was between jobs, but they cut it short once they decided they didn't want to pay any more.
I figured I'd never be asked to sub in Stanwood, but it finally happened a couple of months ago, and it ended up not happening at the last minute. I let them know I'm available Wednesdays for their 9am deep water class and Thursdays for the regular one at 7:30am. They came calling a few days ago and now I get to sub there the next two Wednesdays! It'll be a challenge because I normally teach deep water for 45 minutes and their class is an hour. Everett also provides a microphone and they don't. I don't use it at all for standard depth, but it's nice for deep water so I can explain things. I'm up for the challenge, though, and will do kickboards as well as dumbbells to take up the full hour. In Everett, I switch off, doing kickboards one week and dumbbells the next.
It's 25.2 miles to Stanwood each way, so 100.8 miles at 72.5 cents per mile is a nice incentive. I can't do driving like that all the time, though. Monroe (15.2 miles away) would love to have me on their schedule, but if I was on the schedule, I wouldn't be reimbursed. And that's the drive that was always pretty nerve-wracking and is now quite terrifying. So yeah, occasional subbing is fine and I'm pretty sure I'll have to turn down the opportunities that may arise in winter when it's dark out.
Anyway, I'm really excited to teach at a new location for a bunch of new people. I've been there a couple of times as a participant and everyone was very nice.
