I refuse to buy cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. Pre-made tartar sauce is weird, it's hard to get through a whole jar of cocktail sauce, and both are really easy to make. I just always keep horseradish around. Cocktail sauce made of ketchup and horseradish is great, and my tartar sauce is out of this world. Sorry I don't measure anything like this, but here are the ingredients:

mayo
lemon juice
dill relish*
chopped capers
horseradish
garlic salt or salt and pepper
dill

Dill relish is another thing that's not necessary to keep around. I don't like sweet pickles even though I like sweet relish, so I prefer to chop up a dill pickle if I need dill relish, and keep a jar of sweet relish around.

Speaking of pickles, pickle juice is amazing. It's great as a marinade or to chase shots with. I don't even like whisky, but I'll drink it with a pickleback.

Never buy anyone a coffee cup as a gift unless it's a very awesome coffee cup. Nobody needs any more coffee cups.

Don't be a party pooper if you aren't interested in the sporting event or the awards show. Volunteer to cook since the people who are interested will want to watch. They'll love you and you'll love impressing them with your offerings.

EDITED TO ADD:

The thing that made me think to post this in the first place. Those little jars of gravy are awesome. Sometimes you just want a couple of tablespoons of gravy!

I hate sweet relish and sweet pickles. I love dill pickles, specifically Bubbies. They make a great dill relish, but I agree with you, I just chop up the pickles if I need relish rather than buying a jar and only using half of it before I have to throw it away.

I also agree about sporting events. Spend all day in the kitchen bringing goodies out a little at a time. Plus, wine.

Lastly, I haven't mailed you dvd yet, because I suck and it's too cold to leave the house.

I'll get to it once my ass isn't tongue frozen to the sofa. Also, I think there's a joke in there somewhere. =/

Also, mmmmm... beef curry. And damn, I wish I could get Jeff to eat capers. I love them.

When I moved from LaConner, I must have sent 2 dozen coffee cups to Goodwill.
Now I wish I had them all back. We have the worse coffee cups in the house and with so many guys drinking coffee, there are never any clean.

I cannot tell you how many awesome coffee cups I've picked up with the intention to buy and then thought "the last damn thing I need is one MORE coffee cup".

I agree about the sauces, we even make our own mustard sometimes. store bought docktail sauce never has enough horseradish in it anyway. and fuck yes x a hundred to pickle juice. I always use every last drop of it! one of my favorite things is to put the tough ends of asparagus in one of the pickle jars, after a few weeks they're perfect for bloody marys and I am a huge fan of pickled asparagus just as a snack.

I love all these tips. I especially love capers, and pickle juice. What would you marinate in pickle juice? I am not a cook.

Chicken marinated for a day in pickle juice is amazing. Ugly, but amazing.

OK, so I don't cook much meat. I have two chicken breasts marinating in pickle juice right now. What do I do with them tomorrow? Bake at 350? Broil?

I always grilled them and ate them on sammiches with mustard and mayo and cheese and moar picklez.

One time I used mustard to coat them with pickle-flavor potato chips. :)

Thank you! I don't have a grilling apparatus at the moment so I ended up steam/baking them in foil and they were delicious. I'm going to make pickle-brined fried chicken someday.
