I think the best way to keep from having to worry about whether a candidate is a good fit for a job is to use a temp-to-hire model so you have a probationary period with that person to see how they actually work for you, rather than resorting to stupid ways to try to predict how it will turn out. Ironic, then, that a VP of a staffing company that I know for a fact does the kind of placement I'm talking about would say something as asinine as this:

"The credit check has become a general measure of responsibility and organization," said industrial psychologist Carl Greenberg, senior vice president of Spherion. "If you cannot organize your finances, how are you going to responsibly organize yourself for a company? Organization is a measure of responsibility."

I started my current job with a debt so huge that I eventually had no choice but to declare bankruptcy. I guess Carl doesn't even think about the fact that people who have been through financial hardships might be more dedicated to the job they finally get. Staffing agencies like Spherion can't exist without people he deems unworthy. For a lot of temps, the staffing agency is the last resort when they can't find work.

I agree with you that a credit check is not the way to go. I was married, divorced, hired this CRAP lawyer and got stuck with all the bill. I couldn't afford it on my own, and claimed bankruptcy as well. I'm now clear of all debts, and have been for a few years, but the bankruptcy stays on my record for 7 years. Doesn't mean I'm a bad worker, it means that my life sucked for a few years is all.
