Yup, always.
Did you ever notice that the loop in the 'd' goes below the baseline?

Then I'd better not point out that it's not an even hole in the 'd' either. The far (left) side of the loop is thicker than the top and bottom.

Actually it is the same thickness at the far side as the downstroke.
