I asked a couple of people close to my age last night if they remembered this, and they just looked at me like I had a dog bone in my mouth. Does anyone remember the shampoo that came with a plastic diamond inside? It was to show how thick and luxurious the shampoo was by flipping the bottle over and watching it float down.

This is the kind of thing that I'd have called my mom to ask about. She'd remember.

Here's who I think might remember, and why:

[livejournal.com profile] cecilgene, because he has a Pearl Drops user icon, and that's totally the same era

Alonzave (the Bennifer name I just made up for [livejournal.com profile] moroccomole and [livejournal.com profile] djmrswhite) because they know everything. And yes, I know it should be an S instead of a Z, but I wanted to ensure proper pronunciation.

[livejournal.com profile] gordreece, because he probably stole the plastic diamond out of his mom's shampoo to put in his urethra for kicks

[livejournal.com profile] cattycritic, because she remembers even more obscure shampoo stuff than I do, which I know because she made a Short n' Sassy reference one time that sailed directly over my head. She's traveling, though.

And yes, I googled. Of course.

Did they do test markets for shampoos in the early '80s? It seems like the ads were national ads, like during Trapper John or whatever.

I can't think about Fruit Fresh without thinking about [livejournal.com profile] filarabit saying, "Yuck, your anus: brown and yucky. Mine: fresh and yummy! You need Anus Fresh."

Did they really need two minutes? Geez.

Yeah, they'd be ads with high production value.

My earliest "omg naked people" thing was him coming out of the shower in the opening credits.

All I can remember from shampoo commercials was the one that went "You're going to swear (I swear!) you've got more hair (I've got more hair!)..."

Probably not the same one.

WOW. I don't remember that.
I remember Pearl Drops
and Prell
and Pert
and Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific
and the old school Herbal Essences with the almost naked lady on the bottle
(I have a memory of washing my hair outside under a hose with that shampoo- in our apartment complex one day, just to do it, wash my hair with a hose in the summer. I was a weird weird child...)
Body on Tap (with real beer)
And apparently they used to put a pearl (http://www.inthe00s.com/archive/inthe70s/1030512807.shtml) in the Prell to show how rich and thick it was...Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

Also I saw "Tame" at the grocery outlet the other day. I might just buy it for nostalgic reasons. And it smells really good.

I think it was prell and I think after they had commercials with the pearl they started shipping it with the plastic diamond.

Prell was so rad and it smelled good too. All the shampoos back then were like on overkill with the frangrance- they'd never last today with so many "sensitive" people.

We always got it in the tube so there was no pearl/diamond for us!

I do remember that shampoo. I think my mom used to buy it actually? My memory is very fuzzy on it, but maybe there was some sort of contest where if you found the diamond inside you would win a real diamond? I could be dreaming it all too.

I think they all had the diamond and the contest was a diamond with a special stamp on it or something.

I remember getting a little plastic diamond in one bottle we had, and I thought it was part of a contest where if your diamond had a special mark, you won. I didn't know the plastic diamond thing existed outside of the contest, though.

I don't remember. It was probably too expensive for my family.
