He was a character who lived in the neighborhood. Had a rock star's heroin habit even though he never achieved rock star status. You'd see him everywhere, all the time, right up until he passed.

I had to explain Slats to my bosses when we drove past that. I was so disappointed in them.

My best Slats story:

One time I was at the Broadway Market Fred Meyer (which is now the big QFC) and I was waiting in a pretty long line to check out. Slast walked up to the front of the line as though the rest of us didn't exist and asked the checker, "Where are the thumbtacks?"

Another employee who was nearby was like, oh hey, I can help you find that. I was just relieved because I didn't want this huge line to be held up by a weird and stupid request. Anyway, they walked off, and I said, "Oh please, don't give him anything sharp," which got a nice big laugh from everyone else.

I spent the next seven or so years amazed that he was still alive and that his TINY black clothes always looked so black and clean. He was as much a part of the landscape around here as the stupid Broadway dance steps. I wish they would have died and he was still around. At least he would never sue anyone over a picture.

Why would you want to do public art if you're going to be mad that it becomes part of the landscape? DUH HUR DURRRR

Yes! I was like "Seriously Slats, that is not your son and cutting me in line is not going to delay his death by hipster at all."

It might take me a while to find it. It was like 2 years ago while I was in school. I will look.
