Once and Future Clubs
Oct. 14th, 2006 01:54 amThe news that CBGB was closing has already died down, only to pop up again because the closing date is upon us. Having never been there, the issue came alive to me with the news that Re-bar is for sale. While Re-bar owns an extremely special portion of Seattle's fringe theater-watching, music-loving, drinking-and-dancing crowd, it can't boast the roster of beloved stars who got their start there yet, the way that CBGB can.
So I want to know, why didn't any of the huge stars who are presumably bummed about CBGB's closing do anything about it? Deborah Harry, Laurie Anderson, and a surviving Ramone could have easily afforded it. Madonna was a Danceteria type, but the spare change in her couch keep the place rockin' for another 20 years.
I've never been there, or to New York, but for all the attention it's getting now that it's closing, one would think that it never should have closed in the first place.
On the subject of Re-bar, here are my two wishes:
1) Someone buys it and keeps it as-is
2) The Eagle moves there.
I like the Eagle small and grimey, but it's getting a bit big for its breeches, so the space where Re-Bar is would be a natural progression. But if Re-bar closes, where will Hedwig play the next time around?
Too tired to add the 15 links this post should have. Maybe later.
