"Don't buy a ticket to a show Christopher's planning on seeing."

May 6 was supposed to be our first trip on a plane since we went to Bend, Oregon to see Daniel Tosh in early 2020. It was a fun show and a fun trip, but there was definitely a sense of dread as Tosh made references to COVID heading our way. Plus it wasn't exactly fun when one of my ankles randomly stopped working and Garrett had to drive out to a sporting goods store to find a brace I could use since I couldn't even walk across the room. And he had trouble breathing at the elevation as we drove around exploring.

Information Society is our favorite band and Garrett's never seen them, and I have once, back in 2006. He was very surprised when I showed up in an INSOC t-shirt the next time we met up after the night we met, and was very sad to learn it was at a concert he could have gone to if he knew about it. I only got to go because I spotted a poster for it in the window of a record shop in my neighborhood.

Now we can follow bands on Facebook and there are lots of other ways to find out when they're playing. We really shouldn't have talked ourselves out of going on the Star Trek cruise they were headlining performers on, but it was very expensive. With that regret in mind, it was pretty easy to buy tickets when they announced they'd play at a neat outdoor beach venue in Daytona, Florida with Taylor Dayne and Tiffany. We immediately bought tickets for the show as well as plane tickets, but then Information Society canceled. We decided not to go all the way to Florida to not see our favorite band, and thankfully had an easy time of things because the airline changed their daily schedule and canceled our reservations. Garrett even managed to sell the tickets to the show.

I was supposed to leave for Seattle this afternoon to see My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, a band I've always liked and have developed a much deeper appreciation for in the last few years. I don't own their albums, but their Pandora station is on heavy rotation here; I played it a lot while doing physical therapy when I couldn't go to the YMCA for a few years.

Unfortunately I got an email on Thursday from the venue. One of the band members is hospitalized with a staph infection, and while they were hoping right up until time to travel that he'd be ready, he wasn't. I'd booked my hotel through Priceline, which had mysteriously "failed" to add trip insurance I tried to purchase along with the reservation months ago, and the trip was nonrefundable and couldn't be transferred.

I was kind of dreading going to Seattle during Memorial Day weekend as it's one of the busiest of the year. Northwest Folklife is a huge festival at Seattle Center, and my hotel and the show were both nearby. So the concert being rescheduled was a bit of a relief, assuming I could somehow get my money for the hotel back. I called them directly, and the woman who answered said canceling was not a problem at all, and to just have Priceline call them. Another ten minutes or so in a chat on their website and it was taken care of. I suspect it's because they could probably rent that room at the last minute for a lot more money this weekend that they were more than happy to release me.

Not realizing it was a holiday weekend when I scheduled the trip, I took yesterday off because I didn't want my entire weekend to be all about the trip to Seattle and back. I let my coworkers know that my concert wasn't happening any more, but I would still be out and getting a nice scrub and massage at the Korean spa instead.

Now I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that the rescheduled concert won't be during Bumbershoot, the other giant festival in Seattle. It's back this year after skipping some due to COVID, and this is the 50th anniversary.
