Weekends weren't made for morning people
Nov. 26th, 2023 05:47 amIt's 29 degrees out right now and I knew ahead of time that it would be cold like this, so I decided I wouldn't be walking outdoors this weekend. That meant walking yesterday instead of today because of the hours at the Y. They open Saturdays at 7am and Sundays at 10am. Even 7am is a little late for me, but 10am today would have been completely out of the question because we're having people over at noon. So, it was a rare Saturday walk on the track at the Y.
Mukilteo doesn't have a track, and I learned earlier this week that Marysville's is a little weird. It's got banked corners but people walking are supposed to stay on the outer edge and runners go along the middle. Aren't banked corners designed for running on? The floors aren't even marked, I walked on the wrong side a few laps before finally spotting the tiny list of rules posted on a wall nowhere near the door where it would make sense.
Everett's got a very nice track. It's flat, it has a three lanes (walking, jogging, running), and it's clearly marked. It even has designated directions on different days. I've only ever walked counterclockwise on it because the clockwise days are MWF and I'm always in water fitness.
As it was my first Saturday there I can't yet assume that the Saturday crowd is always annoying, but yesterday it sure was. One pair of friends walked very slowly side by side in the jog and run lanes, but also far enough apart that it was really hard to get past them. And they would go up and down the set of stairs right next to the track even though it's very clearly marked that it's a one-way staircase, down only. And they were so loud I could hear them even though I was using earbuds and they were all the way across the room. There were other walkers in the wrong lane, but they were solo so they weren't as impactful.
I just don't get people like that. Does the crowd have to reach a certain size before they feel like it's time to start following the posted rules? What would be the tipping point? I use the walk lane even if I'm the only person on the track.
Speaking of people being in the way, the pool area was also awful when I went out for a quick steam. Children's swimming lessons were happening, which meant a lot of adults were in the pool area, but not in the pool. One parent was particularly baffling, wedged with a stroller and a few kids between the men's locker room and steam room doors, and not really fitting. There's a very long set of bleachers just around the corner of the pool, so I'm not sure why the lifeguards would let a crowd form around doors.
On days like that from now on, I'll be singing my own version of "YMCA" by Village People. "You need to get the fuck OUT OF MY WAY."
