It's not an airport
Apr. 30th, 2024 05:18 pmAnd you don't have to announce your departure, but a lot of things are rotating out of my sphere of attention and I figure I may as well mention them.
17x6
I haven't done an issue of my haiku zine 17x6 since number 28, and it took a while to get around to that one. I just haven't been in the mood to do the next one, and that's the sort of project you shouldn't do just because you feel obligated. I owed two people issue 29. One has every issue and said not to worry about it but she'd happily take the next one if it ever happens. The other doesn't have them all, so I just mailed her the first five and said I'd send 29 as well if it happens.
Melrose Sheltering in Place
It's actually been 13 months since Nan and I released the final two episodes of our pandemic podcast about Melrose Place. That was another case of lots of long gaps before ending. Nan had moved on to other things and was thinking of leaving it available to do again, but I decided I'd waited long enough and we could be done. That was pretty good timing as it turns out the show's a lot less fun in the last few seasons.
Duolingo
This is the freshest one. I decided a while back that I probably wouldn't renew my subscription, and it wasn't long after that that I got really tired of the obligation. And it was getting especially annoying how repetitious the lessons can be. I know repetition is a great way to learn, but for me personally, they could have sped up the content flow by about 3x. And I thought it was shitty of them to lay off 10% of their translators in favor of AI. At my job, they used AI to take out the most tedious part of our job to free us up to execute better stuff at a higher volume, which I greatly appreciate! We even hired a new teammate and I'm no longer the newest team member.
I still use TimeHop every day but stopped looking at Facebook memories a while back. Those are in TimeHop anyway. My streak is nearly 2,300 days long, and I still very much enjoy the app. Sometimes it's sad because of all the pictures of Sam and Steve, but I still like seeing those goobers. And I'm starting to wonder how long it'll take to go through as each daily batch gets bigger with the passing years. Probably at some point I'll just have to say to hell with the streak and stop checking every day.
Time isn't really what I'm running short on. It's energy. All the driving around and the thought and planning that goes into trying to start teaching water fitness definitely makes me want to do less and relax more. And then there's the extra exercise.
One other thing that made it easy to quit doing Duolingo is Tuvix. He hates the noise and always leaves the room even though I turned off the in-app sounds. Even just the characters talking is enough to drive him to the other floor of the house and that made me sad. And I don't see us moving to another country any time soon.
