Fun for 50
Sep. 29th, 2024 11:28 amOur friend Claire was the last of the three of us to turn 50, and she likes to celebrate milestones with piercings the way a lot of people would with a tattoo. Thankfully she asked for a piercing party several months in advance, because it turns out Garrett and I both needed some lead time, whereas she was able to walk in and use jewelry on display in the shop to get her rook piercing.
After all these years, Garrett chose to do his nipples. The twist was that his are also tattooed now. He's been working with Catfish on a chest piece and doesn't really care for chest tattoos that have random nipples in the design. I agree, but thankfully my plans for my chest don't include total coverage like he's doing.
My project required precise measurements and special jewelry. As a piercing fan from the '90s, I'll say that I don't really care for a lot of the current trends in body jewelry. There's too much gold and gemstones, too much detail and flair, and it's all too expensive! But one innovation I love is the new option to clip the ball end of a barbell into a claw to hold it in place. Perfect for people whose anatomy doesn't support a traditional industrial piercing, a floating industrial also allows placement in lots of new and interesting locations.
Checking my own anatomy, I decided I'd like one in the vertical fold of my ear, and I wanted the barbell to have an oil slick anodization on it. Hence the lead time. I got to see the barbell during my last visit to the shop, before the oil slick was added by someone local. Ben did an incredible job, as always. I'll share the nice photo Vaella the shop apprentice took when it's shared. This photo is correct, rather than flipped like I often post.

Here's a view from the back in case my description didn't give you a good idea of what's going on.

I realized after the fact that it'd be really cool to have another barbell linking up the back side too. Once Ben is sure the holes are healed enough, I'll ask him to order the pieces for that upgrade. That is, of course, if it won't get in the way of some other things I'd like to do eventually.
