I was IMing with a coworker who I know does a lot of different exercisey things, and asked her if she ever gets headaches afterward. Most days lately, I either get a headache, or feel like I'm going to. She asked if I eat beforehand, and I don't. Might I be dehydrated? Maybe but I doubt it. Do I need better shoes? Actually I have a new pair and finally started lacing them correctly!

Ugh, but yeah, I should probably start eating something before I head out. So inconvenient. Currently, I'm out the door ten minutes after I wake up, and that's how I like it. I guess I could eat some sort of bar and throw the wrapper in my pocket. A banana would be delicious, but I can't think of too many trash cans along the route. Maybe I'll specifically look for them and could time it so I finish eating a banana right as I come up to one each morning.

I'm so systematic about these things. You'd laugh if you saw me in the locker room. In the morning, I wear the t-shirt from the previous day, and when I get to work I wrap my shoes in it so they don't get my other stuff dirty. Then, when I'm done, I turn the shirt inside-out and wrap my running tights in it, so they and the inside of my backpack don't get dirty.

Guess I should pick up a few different bars to try.

If I didn't eat breakfast, I would make it about 15 steps before I collapsed.

What time do you wake up and what time do you eat?

I wake up between 8 and 8:30, and it's the first thing I do after feeding Ella. I've woken up late before and had to run out the door without breakfast - I get woozy and feel like I'm going to fall over.

Even when I'm home I wait a couple hours before I eat.

I eat my morning protein bar usually in bed while I drink my coffee. I can last until the drive in if I am grabbing a latte (when there's no time to brew and drink, or I want a "treat"), but yeah I need that AM fuel!

I have to have cereal or toast at the very least. Just something to get me going! The coffee waits until I get to work.

I eat once a day on weekdays... Usually around 3:30pm. I hate eating anything in the morning.

I always have some kind of fuel before a work out, usually not high cal, but something. Fruit doesn't agree with me as much, so usually a Greek yogurt or a protein shake (http://eas.com/product/advantedge-carb-control-ready-to-drink)
But nothing too filling.

I think systematic is an OK thing, with fitness and such, it's good to have a routine, so when you skip it or change it you feel something is missing- increases compliance.

Actually, it's funny. I can never, ever remember to do my stretches when it's not Monday-Thursday since I don't get up and do them straightaway.

Yeah weekends all bets are off, as I have no regular routine, except run sometime on Saturday and hike on sunday. Otherwise my life is CHAOS.

Also, I am thinking hard about getting a routine in place for my summer, as I will be aimlessly sleeping in and such :P

im a fan of a quaker chewy granola bar, or two, for a quick pick me up. no science to back it up but they sure are tasty.

My thought, too: if I get headaches while hiking, it's almost always because I didn't drink enough water.

i vote for the banana.

i am just a bit gobsmacked at the idea that eating a banana before you head out would be an unacceptable delay. i eat one every morning after i give the cats their dental treats and it rarely takes me much longer than a minute or two to finish. maybe keep them on your nightstand and peel it right after your alarm goes off?

I'm just not hungry when I wake up, and have so much to do and so far to go before the bus pulls up at 5:53. I'll try it, though!

understood, i am frequently not hungry when i wake up too. i make myself eat the banana anyway, because i'm finding it's good for both my mood and my gastrointestinal system when i do. i usually follow up with a regular breakfast an hour or so later, when i'm hungry.

also, i try to buy smaller-sized bananas, or, failing that, i cut them in half (half a banana will keep OK in the fridge for a day). for me, a whole large banana is too much food first thing in the morning.

Have you tried maybe a protein shake or something? I can't stand solid food first thing in the morning, but a protein shake gets me through a morning workout and an hour commute to work. Then I have a bowl of oatmeal or some fruit to last me until lunchtime.

To be clear, I haven't tried eating anything at all in the morning until I get to work and have never been hungry. If the headaches are because I need food, it's a surprise to me since I wasn't hungry.

Gonna try having some more water before I set out, too. There's portapotties about halfway through my current route, so no worries there.

You know, I bet you're just dehydrated. When we sleep all night, we're not drinking much (if any) water. So you're not really all that hydrated (just look at that yellow pee!).

Maybe put a bottle of water by your bed each night, and when you wake up, chug that motherfucker before you leave?

Date: 2012-06-21 11:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] christopher575.livejournal.com
I'll chug when I take my morning omeprazole. :)

Date: 2012-06-21 11:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] crushdmb.livejournal.com
Good idea.

Try that and see what happens, but it might not be a bad idea to put a granola bar in your pocket to chow down on that as well.

Also, it's still possible your blood sugar is getting all messed up on the run because you haven't eaten anything, even if you don't FEEL hungry.

I think this is a good point, but now that I know you go out first thing in the morning , more water might be good .

Bananas work great too!

Or maybe pre-make smoothies? That probably wouldn't be too convenient, though.

And I missed your banana mention, lol.

Yeah, cliff bars or whatever would be good, and then just stick the wrapper in your pocket.

I'm thinking a banana or bar that I can have partway into my walk. Not really into having anything before I leave if possible. Especially since I'll have just brushed my teeth.

Nope. My alarm goes off, I turn it off, pee, take my omeprazole, floss, brush, stretch, get dressed, and leave. The whole thing takes ten minutes.
