My walks this week have been torture. Lots and lots of shin pain. The kind I'm used to getting once in a while that normally goes away if I press on, but it's just not any more. I've added some ankle stuff to my morning stretches, but it doesn't seem to help yet.

I figure it's due to the extreme cold. Another possibility is an issue with a joint in my big toe, right foot. It doesn't hurt all day or anything, but if I bend my toe back there's a lot of weird pressure and the kind of pain that's a bit like a stretch gone bad. Hard to explain. It doesn't bother me when I walk, but I wonder if I'm compensating in ways I don't even realize.

No matter how cold it gets, I'm still always comfortable when I'm walking. It would probably be different in wind and rain, but a plain old cold morning is just fine. Unless that's the reason my shins hurt.

Looking forward to Friday, when I can walk later and longer. Maybe I should do a route that starts out following the Monday-Thursday route and see if I get sore around the same area of the neighborhood.

I've always found an exercise that is pretty much just tapping your foot against a wall for 30 seconds to a minute to really help with shin pain. You tap your foot till the front muscle gets tired and repeat it every day. One of the causes of shin splints is the calf muscle growing faster then the muscles covering the shin...or at least that's what my track coach taught us.

Do you think part of your pain could be due to inflammation in your shins at all?

Anything's possible, I'm sure, but I don't know why it would happen all of a sudden.

That indeed sounds like shin splints-I'm not surprised that you'd have an episode what with all your walking. I had always heard that they were hairline "fractures" (obviously not severe ones)in the shin bones. I iced my shins them and took it easy and they'd go away in a few days.

I would rather die from gout than wear crocs tyvm.

BTW I said "Pippa, etc" one time and you do at least the first letter on like half of yours.

If it is shin splints, when i went through them when i started running, ice and compression saved me. Some.nights I would go to bed with ice packed wrapped onto my shins. And i got compression sleeves for my.calves. i did not wear them during exercisr. That caused more issues, but i would wear them after and throughout the day.

I decided to do my original work route today which is much shorter and all downhill. No pain today. Fingers crossed!

Do you sleep on your stomach? I hear that makes you get shin splints more since your calf muscles stay extended for long periods of time.

Funny you should ask. Sometimes I flip onto my stomach, but when I do, I scoot down far enough so my feet can hang off the edge of the bed. :)
