I skated on inlines for years and never really got good at the brake. I prefer to turn my right skate sideways, which usually works well, unless you're going very fast. One time I spun around completely and managed not to fall!
I agree that T-stop is much easier than brakes. But, before you roll somewhere, you must learn at least one way of stopping. And these poor girls didn't knew that.
T-stop is the only one stopping technique, which I can do pretty good. Something like V-stop, acid or parallel are too hard for me. However, T-stop is enough for safe city skating. But it's not so good for the wheels.
The main issue is rain, but it's also hard to find flat places without a lot of tree branches and other hazards. I used to like to skate along Alki Beach when I lived in Seattle and haven't really seen an equivalent here. I might get some skates anyway and do the marina and one other park I like. They aren't as big as I like, but I suppose I can go back and forth.
I used to skate along the Rio Grande in Albuquerque and it was great.
