Pool tour cut short
Aug. 12th, 2023 08:48 amText messages I get from the YMCA can be so impactful to my days, so I should read them more carefully. On Sunday I got one that said the rec pool, which is the one that I always use, was closed for the day, and they'd designate part of the lap pool for open use but availability would be limited based on lap use. I think they should keep a lane reserved for non lap use any time the rec pool closes, such as all those times when a lifeguard calls in sick or is running late. More on that in a bit.
I misread that text and thought the rec pool was closed until further notice, and since I hadn't heard anything from them the rest of the day, I thought I might do a tour of the other pools throughout the week, starting with Mukilteo. Glad I checked the website, as that one's swim area was closed for maintenance and will be until Monday.
I went North to the Marysville Y Monday morning instead. Like all the other county locations, there's just one pool, and I thought for sure it'd be set up completely as lanes. I was pleasantly surprised to find only three set up and the other half of the pool was open. I also learned I remembered the pool depth wrong. I thought it was three feet on one side gradually getting deeper as it goes across, but it's actually three feet on other end and the middle goes to four. That's great because it means there's a spot that's just six inches short of my preferred depth, and it's not in a lap lane.
And I actually used a lap lane for a bit! My new snorkel came and I brought it, and did several laps. I forgot how hard that is, not just the swimming part but also using a snorkel. I gagged a lot and got waterlogged. I just ordered an inexpensive 4-pack of nose plugs to see if that helps, and it occurs to me that I should probably spend some time during the day wearing the snorkel or at least biting down on the mouthpiece to get more used to it.
Back at my local Y Wednesday morning I showed up thinking the rec swimmers would have a lane in the lap pool because I hadn't figured out my reading comprehension issue with the text. Instead, I found that the rec side was closed because they were short a lifeguard. I sat on a bench near the end of a lane and the swimmer there said I could share it, but I thanked her and declined. There were nine of us rec swimmers waiting and I hardly think she would have said we should all get in. So we all waited while she and the other five lap swimmers all enjoyed a lane to themselves, even though rec swimmers outnumbered them 1.5 to 1.
I may write an email the next time this happens.
Ben from the piercing shop sent me a message on Instagram letting me know the jewelry for my new guiche came. I made an appointment for today, and headed to my local Y Friday morning for one last visit to the pool for the time being. Then work was really slow yesterday and I rescheduled the piercing to free today up. On the way I went to Bun & Oc, a new Vietnamese restaurant that's now the second place in Everett where I can get banh hoi, my favorite dish.

It's better at White Lotus, but I'll visit Bun & Oc again because they have lots of amazing-sounding dishes I've never tried or even heard of. Perwinkle snails, cherrystone clams? Wow!
While I was eating I saw this fun post on the shop instagram featuring the jewelry I'd been waiting on for a month.

I'd been dreading the piercing, but it hurt much less than I thought it would. I was on my hands and knees on a padded table to do it, and the nerves really built up the tension between my shoulders, so maybe the pain from that distracted from the needle and the stretching. I've never seen my palms so sweaty.
The jewelry's in place and I really hope I can heal it out well without any migration. It'd be such a nice triumph after what I've just been through with the right nipple.
And since I'm out of the pool for a while anyway, I have a tattoo appointment coming up on Thursday and will probably schedule another while I'm there.
