Generic Soda, originally uploaded by RichM921.

Does anyone else remember a time when grocery stores would have an aisle full of generic items and the labels were all black and white? I wish I could time travel to take pictures of that.

I remember when that was featured in an Almost Live! - it was the first Almost Live I'd ever seen.

as did I. However, that one short holds a special place in my heart, as it was a bit about how to be in the Seattle Music Scene, and it had a stereotype grunge guy (this was 1994) dialing people asking if they wanted a subscription to the Seattle P-I. At the end they said "How do me in the Seattle Music Scene is brought to you by - GENERIC BEER!"

I used to drink the one on the left. King Soopers grocery stores in Colorado carried it. That swill was like $2.30/6 pack. 3.2% alcohol and the whole deal.

It was better than Coors at least.

I totally remember that. It was the inspiration for this icon.

General Brewery in Tumwater, WA made it. Same brewery as Lucky Lager. Good times.

It was Olympia Brewery Company..and it was actually Hamm's beer that was in those cans. Nothing more.

Are you totally sure about that? I swore it was General (who also brewed Lucky) and had the 11oz stubbies with the rebus puzzles under the caps. I was obsessed with the stuff, which was easy as it was $3.50 a sixer at City Market on Olive in Seattle.

I know that General was eventually bought by Oly Brewery (which was absorbed into Miller), so maybe we're both right?

P.S. My favorite local bar here in downtown LA carries Oly in the can. It is pretty much the best place in town for that simple reason.

My father retired from the Olympia Brewery Co. We have so much crap from that place (hats, shirts, towels, service awards, glasses, framed pictures OMG THE LIST NEVER ENDS)

We could totally be both right. I was too little to remember who owned it before Olympia, but I know when it was Olympia, it was family owned and they threw the BEST COMPANY PARTIES EVER.

and I know it was Hamm's beer inside that Generic can!

Oh man! Family history with Olympia Brewery! I am not worthy. I tip my hat.

As for what was inside that can, as long as it's FROM THE LAND OF SKY BLUE WATERRRRS! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc7HoWEk6y8)

For my 21st birthday.. my first FREE bar drink was a damn Olympia Beer.

I hated my father (who ordered it for me) at that moment.

The closest I've ever come was the couple of years we got on the government food program where we lived, and we'd get boxes of commodity food. White cans, black lettering, a sparse picture of whatever was inside. Beef had a cow, pears had a pear, and so on.

The package of processed cheese didn't, though. It was just a cardboard box labeled cheese. Almost as good as Velveeta, that stuff.

There should be a whole store of generic products.
It could just be called STORE.
