It works though, and here's why: the pants pattern is small enough that it doesn't fight with the large, very simple plaid. The two patterns are actually complementary because they echo each other in pattern motif but have opposite colorings (grey with a black pattern, and black with a grey or white pattern). You chose a monochromatic color scheme so the colors don't clash.
This not mixing patterns thing, whoever thinks you should never do that doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about.
