One ridiculous thing from last night

A girl bothered me and Alan on the street last night sometime around 9pm, asking us to sign a petition. Seems a little late to be wandering around asking people to think about things.

People with clipboards and notebooks wanting money and signatures also used to be nicely contained downtown and on Broadway. I'm seeing them more often in my neighborhood on Pine. There should be a universal hand signal or badge we can wear to opt out of these interactions, much like the do-not-call list.

My preferred tactic when dealing with anyone who approaches me on the street asking for something is to look them in the eye and clearly say "I'm sorry. I don't speak English".

They're always in the U District too, and along several spots on the Ave at that, so that you have to work pretty hard to dodge them.

The problem with this crap is that it works. They get enough people to hand them money that it makes it worth the organizations' while to send kids out to streets with clipboards and binders to harass people.

I get more irritated with guys in white band/military uniforms holding charity cans bugging me when I come out of the grocery store. (Some kind of Catholic thing?)

That, and elementary-age kids selling candy bars for school (?) at the entrance of a grocery store at 10pm on a school night, no parents in sight. No, I don't want overpriced candy! I'm diabetic! And where the hell is your mother!

The guys in white uniforms are something different from the Salvation Army.

I don't give to the Salvation Army, though, because they discriminate in hiring. I'd rather give my money to charities that will hire anyone qualified, gay or straight.
