christopher575: A model on The Price is Right showing that the contestant picked the right price, $575 (Default)

I'm starting to see it wrong more often than right now, which is stupid because it's being written incorrectly by professional bloggers and webmasters. Here is a handy guide:

ITS = BELONGS TO IT
IT'S = IT IS

So true.

I'm wondering if relying on autocorrect is part of the problem?

I really think that a lot of people think "it's" means "belongs to it" the same way "Christopher's" means "belongs to Christopher" but don't realize that possessive pronouns don't get an apostrophe. A lot of people probably type "her's" and only get "his" right.

Good analysis. Another indictment of our education system, maybe?

Everyone learns this stuff in school. Quit making excuses for them. :)

LOL. On the contrary, I'm just trying to find someone to blame!

I think it's more a problem with the inconsistencies in the English language.

Though, personally, I don't think it's any excuse.

the kid's reading sheet had that mistake and i went out of my way to encircle "it's" and put WRONG USE OF APOSTROPHE. grrrrrrr!

I remind myself that the contraction of "it is" is indicated by the apostrophe: it's.

PS Great meeting you Saturday!

So very annoying. I mean, I get that people want possessives to have apostrophes, but who has ever seen a contraction without one? I think to/too/two pisses me off more, but its/it's can be reasoned out in under a second without having to memorize the difference.

It's not that important.
I never remember when to leave out the ' so I usually put it there no matter what. "its" just looks wrong to me.

It wouldn't look wrong to you if people did it correctly on a consistent basis.

Yup. Society is full of people doing things wrong because they can't be bothered. Oh.

If I am not adding the ' it is because I am too lazy, especially when on my phone -- not because I don't know the difference.

I just figured out that you can type it.s and it will show up as it's. This is amazing!
And yet I still almost never do it when I'm typing on my phone.

i avoid the problem by never using caps or apostrophes on lj or other casual use :p sorry if it bothers you, i am actually trying to get better about it. i promise i always do it perfectly on my homework or when i had to write work emails though ;)

I see more and more instances of its/it's misuse every day. It's* irritating.

I have to constantly correct this in marketing material - written by supposedly educated people. It seems simple, but it's not just that apostrophe that throws them - some of them misplace apostrophes everywhere.
