One very stupid thing from last night

There is a very bitter guy named Mike who is usually at karaoke. He's the type that will ask you out and guilt trip you for the rest of your life if you tell him no thanks, which is complete bullshit in my case because he specifically said, "Am I your type at all? Please be honest, I won't be mad." Yeah, he's not my type at all, because he sucks all the joy out of the room every time he's around.

He's always just been kind of annoying but last night he took it too far. He came up to me and asked if I was responsible for all the "horrible girl singers who were there tonight." I told him I knew a very large group of cool girls and I was personally glad to have them there. He gave me a very tired spiel about how it's supposedly so much more fun without any women around, which I told him was ridiculous. I had to walk away when he said, "I remember when gay bars were gay."

I can kind of understand when an ignorant straight person needs to have gay bars explained to them. They really don't get that our lives would literally be in danger if we went to Tiki Bob's and started introducing ourselves to the men there. Society just isn't that integrated yet, and even if it were, we'd still want bars where the majority of the men are gay so we wouldn't waste our time barking up the wrong trees.

However, gay bars are not supposed to be exclusively gay. I would argue that women are out of place somewhere like the Eagle late on a busy night where penises are flopping about, but The Cuff? On a fucking Thursday? Give me a break. If you were to ask everyone at the bar, it's actually him who most people would say they wished would go home, not the girls.

Yeah, gay bars were "really gay" back when people snuck into them and would never admit having been there the next day. You know who doesn't belong? Anyone who isn't comfortable being there and anyone who treats anyone else disrespectfully. But that's true anywhere.

I'm glad alexjon was with me when he came up to announce his disapproval, because I'm afraid people might not believe me because it's so fucking stupid.

Misogyny aside, karaoke nights are supposed to be fun. His digs about the "awful singers" mean nothing to me. If he thinks only good singers should be on stage, he's missing the point. 

Fuck him, and fuck that. I love my fabulous wimmins and I love anyone who is there to have fun. I wish he'd learn how.

I'm glad to read your perspective on this. Naturally it pisses me off when I see bachelorette parties in gay bars but I realized it's just my general disdain of bachelorette parties. they could be doing it at PF Chang's and I'd STILL be annoyed at them. I always wonder if the gays think the wimmins are "taking over" their turf.

I am so jealous of your hoppin karaoke scene. I need some capital to start my own karaoke club :))
