This week I finally bit the bullet and decided to stop regularly using an alarm to wake up. It's not really necessary any more for several reasons, the main one being that most days I start working around 8:30 or 9:00 but I still get up at around 4:00. My free time has mostly shifted to before work. And it works surprisingly well! For the last 7+ years I had an alarm at 4am and went straight to my desk to work and get it over with, but now that I work with people in Australia, I can't do that. Our days overlap Monday-Thursday 2-5pm, so I need to work in the afternoon.

If there's something I want to go do in the morning, I can work the first part of my day early and then take a break to do it. There's still flexibility there.

The thing that made me decide to finally quit using the alarm was how jarring it can be to wake up with it. I'd almost always wake up before it and turn it off ahead of time, but if I was deep in a dream when it went off, I'd feel terrible and it'd take forever to shake that feeling. Why spend 20 minutes wishing I felt good enough to get out of bed because of that when I could sleep instead?

Sometimes like today I wake up pretty early and get out of bed at 3am or so. If I wake up way too early to get up, sometimes I'll watch an episode of whatever show I'm watching and then go back to sleep. Humans naturally sleep in two chunks and it feels amazing to do it, but we've gotten so used to doing it all at once that it's hard to now.

Anyway, I've entered a new era. Alarms are to be used only when necessary and that won't be often.

I mentioned before that I'd share my LiEv blog post about the café when it published. Their grand opening was two days ago and it looks like things are going great! The blog contacted me about another story option that I went ahead and accepted because it's news about a place I've written about twice. I was still going to turn it down, but I looked at the menu everything looked so good.

I don't think I ever mentioned that one of the perks at my new job is free lunch on Wednesdays. I might leverage that a couple of times so I can write this piece without losing any money. Not that it really matters in the end since money's fungible.

In other news, the county asked me to produce another series of four TikToks, and two of them are ready to go! One tomorrow and one a week after that.

Without further delay, the shirts:

week12a week12b
week12c week12d

The cat astronauts and the Fiat Multipla are gifts from Garrett, and the other two are thrift store finds. I really miss thrifting but I don't really need to do it these days. And it's not even because of the pandemic that I'm staying away. I just don't particularly need stuff. In fact, I should probably fill a bag of stuff to drop off at one.

There's one I do want to go to, it's in a former nightclub space downtown. I always wanted to see the inside as it was boarded up for years and my tattoo artist said it was a cool space. Hopefully it's not packed so full that one can't get an idea of its former grandeur.
