I tried a sip of my friend's americano the other day, but didn't like it because there weren't any sweeteners or lighteners added. I personally prefer syrup and half-and-half in my brew. He said he decided to start drinking black coffee years ago so he could avoid the extra calories after a friend told him it would only take him three days to acquire the taste.

I think I'm going to try it. Beer and wine are two of my favorite beverages, and there was a time when I couldn't stand either one. In two or three days I'll run out of syrup or half-and-half, and when that happens I'll try going black. I don't think I'll actually end up switching, but I'm interested in trying, just for kicks.

I tried that once. With tea (iced or hot), I had no problem. Since coffee never seems to be as consistent, it didn't work. I at least need to have the cream 'cause it cuts through the bitterness which is often present. That being said, I have managed to do without anything when I use my french press at home.
Good luck with it.

Why is it called an americano?

It goes against everything that Americans pretty much stand for at this point: Flavor over nutrition.

One popular explanation for the name is that it was originally intended as an insult to Americans, who wanted their espresso diluted. During the Second World War, American occupational forces in Italy searched for the "cup of joe" they were accustomed to at home, which local baristas tried to emulate for them.

I love the flavored creamers that they sell for coffee.

...I gave up coffee JUST to give up the calories in the creamer.
Drink it black? HELL NO. not worth it.

I prefer to drink my coffee black as well. In fact, when I pony up for something at an espresso joint, it's usually an iced americano.

To paraphrase something an uncle of mine once said about his preference for black coffee, "I'm both pale enough and sweet enough as is."

Try it! I bet you will notice the lack of sugar-crash within a couple hours of intaking the syrup. I used to drink mochas all the time. Now, on the rare occasion that I do, I notice that I'm crashing within an hour after drinking. GOOD LUCK!

Welcome to the world of black coffee.
If it gets that far, try peet's Kenya. It's pretty much the best coffee that is widely available.

For me it all depends on the coffee as to if I add anything or not. But I have found not smoking any more I drink black coffee more often than adding anything to it....
