Crock pot, originally uploaded by christopher575.

I just got this thing last week and this is my first time using it. It'll be
so nice to get home and have dinner waiting for me.

Nope. Bool goki, fingerling potatoes, onions, carrots, celery.

I had to look up bool goki, but that does sound much nicer than smoked oysters.

Something so amazing and complicated couldn't be my first try.

It's not really complicated, just takes a little preparation. I have complete faith in your ability to make it.

Yum! Cool beans. I love crock pots. I've even done barbequed ribs in them. I rely on online recipes or cheap cookbooks I've found at used bookstores.

I have to say that the simplicity of the device is one of the things that attracted me to it. It's just got low and high, and all the recipes you can find tell you which setting and how long.

Lots of good recipes out there, especially on about.com.

yeah i guess i just dont get when you would set things up to use it, unless you get up really early to set it before you go to work. i guess thats what most people do but im not a morning person in the least - i get up just in time to brush my teeth, throw on clothes and basically run out the door.

so besides doing it before work in the morning... by the time you get home in the evening its too late to do something like a crock pot meal.

Yeah, you gotta do it in the morning. Which is nice because I hate having to cook when I'm already hungry and want dinner.

I guess you could get all the stuff ready at night and store it in a container and dump it into the crock pot in the morning.

The most common thing I cook in my crockpot is a variation on Alton Brown's pot roast recipe--
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/pot-roast-recipe/index.html

He puts his in a foil pouch in an oven after doing the browning, but I put it in the crockpot and cook it for hours.

And instead of using a chuck roast, I use something less fatty, such as rump roast. (Too much fat will just turn into orange goo in the crockpot.)

And instead of using tomato juice and reducing it, I just throw in some tomato paste and a little water.

And I leave out the olives. The raisins are weirdly good in this, though.
